Geology | Small cliff on the southern edge of Stoddarts Hush, a remnant undisturbed by the mining operations, formed from the Main Limestone or Richmond Cherts. |
Record Name | Stoddarts Hush. Ancient juniper and rowan trees. |
Record Description | A solitary ancient rowan or mountain ash(Sorbus aucuparia) with a even more ancient solitary juniper (Juniperus communis ssp. nana) stand guard over Stodarts and Hungry Hushes. These two ancient treees which grow at the top edge of a cliff exposed to the full force of the north west winds, are the sole survivors of the woodland once widespread on the highest limestone scars across the whole of Swaledale. The rowan is visible from below but the juniper cannot be seen until the final approach is made across the rough mining ground.
